A long history of achievements and extensive administrative experience have helped Philip lead the NSW Bar Association for nearly two decades. He is also an avid biographer, having made numerous contributions to the Australian Dictionary of Biography.

• Awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, recognising his significant service to the law, through the NSW Bar Association, to public administration, and to the community.
• Served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Administration) of The Australian National University.
