John has led the Office of International Law in the Attorney-General's Department since 2013. He is responsible for advice to government on all areas of international law.
- Currently services as the Agent for Australia before the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and has appeared before both those tribunals.
- Formerly worked as Counsel in the Office of General Counsel, as an in-house Legal Adviser for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and Departmental Liaison Officer to Attorney-General Robert McClelland.
- Awarded a Public Service Medal in the 2018 Australia Day Honours for 'outstanding public service through the provision of legal advice to the Commonwealth'.
