As an Andre Hoffmann Fellow, Dr Aslam plans to deepen her understanding of the emerging technologies of relevance to the circular economy and the regulations related to it.
I have successfully delivered research-based evidence to decision makers, policy makers and relevant stakeholders through the application of theoretical and applied scientific knowledge, and extensive advocacy and consultations.
The circular economy is a revolutionary concept that seeks to rethink the way we use and reuse resources.
Instead of the traditional linear model of taking, making, using, and disposing, the circular economy envisions a closed loop system where resources are constantly cycled and regenerated, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
Dr Hina Aslam, an accomplished environmental researcher, is currently working on circular economy policy and regulation at The Australian National University (ANU) College of Law through the prestigious Andre Hoffmann Fellowship for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The Andre Hoffmann Fellowship offers early-career academics the opportunity to work at the intersection of society, science and technology through a two-year joint appointment between the World Economic Forum and leading academic institutions.
“I feel privileged and humbled to be selected as an Andre Hoffman Fellow,” Dr Aslam said.
"This is a great opportunity to advance my career in addressing environmental challenges by managing resource circularity issues governed by policy and regulations, to bring about change that must match environmental goals with the circular economy, and foster a safe and just space for all social ambitions."
Dr Aslam said the fellowship would allow her to broaden the scope of her research in “pursuit of saving the planet and humanity from environmental damages and climate catastrophes, as well as the mounting economic challenges”.
Dr Aslam has a PhD in ecology from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Master's in Environmental Engineering and Sciences from the Beijing Institute of Technology.
She has a wealth of professional, technical, operational and administrative experience working on a variety of development-sector projects in several regions, including South Asia, Asia-Pacific and West Asia.
“I have successfully delivered research-based evidence to decision makers, policy makers and relevant stakeholders through the application of theoretical and applied scientific knowledge, and extensive advocacy and consultations,” she said.
Dr Aslam’s research interests include natural resource management, environmental and social impact assessments, ecosystem services assessment and economic valuations, renewable energy, climate change, climate finance, water resource management and governance, public-private partnerships, greening China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Belt and Road (BRI), corporate sustainability and sustainable development goals.
“During my career, I have successfully led and delivered a range of projects and programmes in multiple work streams at both national and regional levels simultaneously,” Dr Aslam said. “I have also secured funding in the field of energy, environment, climate change and ecological restoration.”
As an Andre Hoffmann Fellow, Dr Aslam plans to deepen her understanding of the emerging technologies of relevance to the circular economy and the regulations related to it. This includes supplier responsibilities, waste management, cross-border value chains, embedded emissions accounting frameworks, and decarbonisation of hard to abate sectors and industries all over the region and the globe.
“I will drive intensive collaborations among the World Economic Forum, ANU, and all involved stakeholders to deliver specific action-oriented outcomes through engagements, research, career development activities, workshops, conferences, collaborations and building networks,” she said.
