Financial support for Higher Degree Research (HDR) students
The objective of the HDR student funding is to assist each research student to complete their thesis. The student is required to demonstrate how the funds will assist with the production of their thesis. Each application is assessed on its merits; on the demand from other applicants; and on the total amount available in any year. Any expenditure must be approved before it is incurred by completing the grant funding application form, which can be found on the HDR Wattle site.
ANU College of Law research programs are:
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
There are two types of funding:
- Discretionary Research Grant
- Fieldwork Funding Grant
For PhD and MPhil candidates who commenced in or after 2021, applications for the Discretionary Research Grant and Fieldwork Funding Grant will only be considered if the candidate has not exceeded their initial maximum submission date. For PhD candidates this is four years for full time candidates and 8 years for part time candidates not taking into account approved leave. For MPhil candidates it is 1 to 2 years full time or 2 to 4 years part time not taking into account approved leave.
Discretionary research grant
To fund expenses related to PhD research. PhD students can apply for up to $3,500 and MPhil students can apply for up to $2,000 during their candidature.
Fieldwork funding grant (CURRENTLY SUSPENDED)
This grant funds expenses such as travel and accommodation whilst on fieldwork. PhD students can apply for up to $6,000 and MPhil students can apply for up to $3,000 during their candidature.
Most of our students at some point in their research candidature conduct some form of field work which in many cases involves travel to different locations across Australia and the world. All of our students are encouraged to network at seminars and conferences and apply to present at conferences locally and internationally.
