To achieve this, emergent leaders across our vibrant and diverse Asia Pacific region will have to work together to transform local and global realities. Committed to supporting this, Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan) and the ANU College of Law (in partnership with the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific and the ANU Japan Institute) have established an exciting, collaborative opportunity for study of globally relevant policy issues and international leadership.
In 2025, participating students will travel to Tokyo for a Summit held between 12-18 February.

Details about the Competition
20 students will be selected for the 2025 event: 8 from the ANU and 12 from Sophia University . In January and February 2025, students will engage in preparatory work (independent study, on-demand and/or real-time digital classes and virtual group discussions) before participating in an intensive Summit at Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan) between 12-18 February 2025. The Summit course will involve stimulating interdisciplinary and inter-institutional tuition from experts in law, politics, and international relations. Participating students will gain skills and knowledge necessary to drive positive global social change and creatively solve complex challenges facing humanity, as well as shared experiences with a network of interdisciplinary, intercultural collaborators.
Documents required for your application
In your application, you will need to supply:
- a CV; and
- a statement of motivation and experience relevant to public policy, international collaboration and the thematic focus of the Summit (maximum 400 words).
Students may also submit up to two statements of recommendation. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview.
Expenses and Financial assistance
Selected students will automatically be 'pre-approved' for an ANU Law Careers and Employability Travel Grant of $3,500 AUD.
Any trip expenses exceeding the travel grant must be covered by the applicant.
Participant Eligibility and Enrolment
The course is available to a current ANU student who:
- Is a domestic or international student; and
- Is enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at ANU College of Law, either as a single or flexible double degree, and has completed a minimum of five 1000 level LAWS courses at the time of applying; or
- Is enrolled in a Juris Doctor at ANU College of Law, and has completed a minimum of five 6100 level LAWS courses at the time of applying; or
- Is enrolled in a Master of Laws at ANU College of Law.
Selected students will be enrolled in the course LAWS4011 or LAWS6011 and receive 6 units towards their program.
Master of Laws students will also be enrolled in LAWS6011, and be permitted to count this course towards their program.
Summit Theme
The theme of the 2025 Summit will be ‘Migration, Refuge and Asylum in the Asia-Pacific’. This will involve (i) assessing the current situation from a holistic and inter-disciplinary perspective and identifying achievements, challenges and opportunities (ii) articulating the vision for the future and approaches likely to realise it, and (iii) identifying concrete strategies for change, with a particular emphasis on international co-operation.
